Rats

Rats
Size Larger In Size, usually 10-12 Inches
Color Brown, Dark Brown or Black in Color
Description
  • Rats, much like mice can be found sneaking around the house. However, rats are much bigger, instead of being a just a few inches; they can reach up 10-12 inches in length. Some rats are burrowing creatures, meaning they prefer to nest in dark areas, like digging holes in gardens or searching for holes in walls to reside - others prefer nesting in trees, bushes and structural locations. They usually line their nest with softer materials like chewed up fabrics, papers and other fibrous materials, even twigs, leaves or grasses. Unlike mice, they require a water source on a daily basis, so if there is not a sufficient source inside, they will travel back outside each day to fine one.
  • Rats are typically nocturnal animals, coming out at night, roaming and memorizing pathways they grow accustomed to. Though they are larger pests, they are still able to gnaw and squeeze through small gaps (1/2 inch) in doors and windows. To prevent a rat invasion make sure that all openings to the outdoors are sealed. Since rats are able to memorize the many different paths they may take, rat traps may be avoided at first, but often times do work with time.
  • Rats can cause a great deal of damage from their gnawing and are also known to carry many diseases; Fires can be started by chewing on wiring and diseases can be spread through their droppings and urine. Also they can bring in other pests such and fleas and mites from their fur.
  • Control Advice Rats are known to move indoors to build their nests in warm places. They move indoors during the cooler months and usually return outside during summer. They can be found in either the basements, between walls, or attic, using the insulation to make a nest. If any droppings, bite marks in fruits, or recently noticed holes in walls, the presence of the rat may be very likely. Call for an inspection and set up traps to catch the rats.
