Termites live in colonies that can grow to large numbers. Depending on the species, these colonies can be located either below ground or in wood. Termites randomly and continuously forage and will penetrate the home in search of their food, cellulose, a portion of wood. A termite can enter a home through small cracks (1/64th inch) in roofs, tiling, slab floors, foundations and walls. It best to look for possible signs of termites being in your area, checking dead trees other exposed wood around the area. Subterranean termites have been known to forage up to 300 feet from their colony in search of food, so if neighbors have termites, then it is very likely they be in your home as well. Take precautionary measures to ensure your home isn't the next to experience termite devastation. Termites can infest a home by being carried in through infested wood such as old furniture, firewood or building materials, or by flying in through small cracks present in the roof tiles or in the walls. Or in the case of subterranean termites; entering through a small crack in the slab or foundation wall. They nest in the wood or in the ground and have large colonies with a Queen that reproduces worker termites and soldier termites for protection. The colonies they form can vary from a few hundred termites to several thousands, eating the wood and building a network of tunnels travel. Termites do not typically carry diseases; however they can cause significant damage to the structure they are infesting if it is left untreated.
