Fire Ant Facts

  • Between 1/8 and 3/8 of an inch in length and reddish brown in color.
  • Can inflict painful stings and have been known the kill cattle and other large animals.
  • Nest in the soil at the base of trees, shrubs, grass or in homes; colonies can contain up to 250,000 ants.

These aggressive insects feed primarily on living insects and dead animals. Upon infiltrating a home (through holes or cracks and can infest garages), however, they are drawn to fats and sweet foods. Fire ants are attracted to a variety of food and moisture sources such as spills, open food containers and pet food/water bowls.
