Florida Wood Roach Facts

  • Typically 1¼-1½ inches in length and are a dark brown to black in color.
  • Found primarily outdoors in thick vegetation and debris such as wood piles, leaf litter and ground cover.

The Florida woods cockroach is also commonly referred to as the stinking cockroach and also the Florida stinkroach or skunk cockroach. When threatened by predators, this species releases a foul-smelling liquid. In Florida, they may be found hiding under palmetto leaves. For this reason, the Florida woods cockroach is also sometimes called the palmetto bug.
