Normally live outdoors Feed on damp decaying vegetation Commonly invade homes Often found nesting in mulch Unlike other insects and pests, the millipede has numerous body segments and pairs of legs. They live mostly in moist decaying plant materials. In order to prevent an infestation, it's best to remove piles of leaves and any other build up of plant materials. The millipede can vary size, ranging from a fraction of an inch to several inches long. They do not bite nor are they known to carry diseases. Millipedes may also find refuge inside through small openings in windows and doors, or possible cracks in walls. Millipedes are often times found outside of the house, usually in the garden and surrounding landscape. They live in moist areas, much like mounds of leaves. To help prevent a possible infestation, remove piles of decaying plant materials. Millipedes may also try to migrate indoors during the fall when temperatures are dropping, or if the moisture in their original habitat has increased too much for their comfort. Indoors, the millipedes do not pose any health threats to people. However they may become a nuisance by nesting underneath carpets and rugs, furniture and any other places inside homes that could provide a warm moist habitat.

Millipedes are attracted to moist vegetation and leaf litter. To prevent infestation, keep mulch less the 2 inches thick and remove any decaying vegetation and leaf litter from outside of your home. Seal exterior cracks. The infestation will need to be treated directly by a pest control professional. Although you can reduce their presence, it may be impossible to completely eliminate them. |
