What looks like an apple seed and bites people? Bed bugs are parasites that are commonly found in sleeping areas of homes and hotels, feeding on people during the night and then staying hidden during the day.
Female bed bugs lay 1 to 5 eggs a day on average, totaling about 200 eggs in her lifetime. Bed bugs can go from egg to adult in about 1 month and they have 5 instars, meaning that they molt to get bigger. A blood meal, which can last from 3 to 10 minutes, is required for each molt; however, bed bugs can survive several months between feedings.
An adult bed bug has a flat round body about the size of an apple seed, and right after feeding, the bed bug is a bright red color which gradually fades to brown as it digests the human blood.
Bed bugs will spend 70% of their time near their food source, i.e., you. Bed bugs do not jump or fly, but are good crawlers, moving at 3 to 4 feet a minute, and they can easily move between adjacent rooms or units via wall voids and utility chases.
Bed bugs can be difficult to eradicate because they can hide anywhere in your home, including closets, walls, clothes, stuffed animals, games, furniture, carpeting, and, of course, your mattress.
Beware of over-the-counter products, as most do not work and can drive bed bugs deeper into wall voids and make eradication harder.
