Truly Tips - Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are a significant concern for homeowners, often limiting the enjoyment of outdoor spaces. Their presence can pose health risks and disrupt daily activities.

Here are a few quick facts about mosquitoes:

  • Globally, there are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes, making them the deadliest animals on Earth. Mosquitoes are responsible for nearly one million deaths annually and cause illness in millions more. In North Carolina, particular attention is given to the transmission of West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and La Crosse Encephalitis. Additionally, mosquitoes play a critical role in the life cycle of heartworms, which can adversely affect pets.
  • The Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes Albopictus), first identified in Texas in 1985, is now the primary species responsible for mosquito bites in North Carolina. This mosquito is approximately 3/16 inch in length and is distinguished by its black and white striping.
  • Male mosquitoes do not bite; instead, they feed on plant nectar, similar to bees. Female mosquitoes require a blood meal to support the development of their eggs prior to laying them. Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, and susceptibility to mosquito bites can vary among individuals.
  • Male mosquitoes typically live for 2–3 weeks, while female mosquitoes have a lifespan of approximately one month. Female mosquitoes can lay up to 200 eggs in standing water or moist soil, where the eggs may survive through winter and periods of dryness for up to one year. Mosquito larvae are capable of developing in less than one ounce of water, making potential breeding sites widespread and often inconspicuous.

A comprehensive visual inspection of the entire property, combined with an understanding of the homeowner's lifestyle, enables us to determine the most effective mosquito treatment plan.

There are a couple of treatment options available under our Mosquito Control Program, including:

  • Monthly treatment of foliage, conducted during peak mosquito season from April through October, to reduce mosquito populations.
  • A combination treatment using In2Care pots and targeted treatment of foliage with botanical products. This program is custom-designed for each property, aiming to reduce mosquito populations while minimizing the impact on beneficial pollinators such as bees and butterflies. In2Care Pots are strategically placed around the property to assist in reducing the mosquito population. Monthly inspections and maintenance are scheduled automatically for customers. Pots are typically installed in March, serviced monthly through peak season, and removed at the end of the season for cleaning and storage, ensuring a seamless experience for homeowners.
